What do you do?

I’m responsible for the visual communication of the thinking and ideas behind Flex.

Three reasons I am working on Flex

  • There is no inherent ‘Why’ (in life). The game is to make up the best one possible.
  • Thinking always overlaps with feelings. There are always times when I don’t feel like doing something. Taking action outside of the realm of feelings mean I do things whatever I feel. Validation and a different sense of self (and positive feelings) often come as a result.
  • On a macro and micro level – the thing for humans to discover is that they have a huge capacity to create new realities for themselves and the world (we made it this way and we can make it differently); without this discovery there is only reacting to ‘the way things are’. Flex enables people to find this out first hand.

What was I doing before Do Something Different?

I was a marketing geek at a digital agency in Brighton for over ten years. And like Ben, I was also thinking way too much, though almost certainly about more trivial things.

Why did I join?

In my agency days, I got to work with many brilliant people and learned a lot, but you have to be pretty agnostic about who you are working for and what you are selling. I wanted to use my knowledge to get behind something more meaningful with a purpose. I really liked the thinking or rather doing behind Do Something Different. It chimed with the way I had managed quite a bit of change in my life.

What do I do?

My personal mission is to help more people discover Do Something Different. This allows me to tinker and fiddle in many areas of the business, which is exactly how I like it. Having come from a digital marketing background, I’m keen to use data to inform what we develop to help people.

What do I most want to change in the world?

I have big ambitions. I don’t think we can solve any of the big issues in this world without changing our relationship to work and money.  People should work together and not for other people. We are trying to follow this principle with Do Something Different.

What do I most want to change about me?

Take more risks. Committing to change without knowing the outcome is hard but something worth conquering.

What am I doing differently?

Over the last year many little changes have crept in. But getting up an hour early and starting the day in my own time is a game changer. I’m also watching very little TV, having more veggie days and trying different ways to get where I need to go.

What do I do?

The Get the Data team and I are analysing the app’s data so we can improve the user experience and make sure that Flex is helping as many people as possible.

Reasons I believe in Flex

  • It’s through doing that we learn what we are really capable of.
  • I think Flex will let some people enjoy life a bit more.

What impact would you like Do Something Different to have in the world?

To be the roadmap that helps to nudge everyone along a new, healthier, happier and more inclusive path – which often seems daunting, scary even, but is actually very possible with small, doable actions!

If you want something different from life, spend less time thinking about it and actually Do Something Different, one step at a time.

What impact would you like Do Something Different to have in the world?

  • I think small changes make a massive difference. I would like Do Something Different to create lots of small positive changes for as many people as possible.

I like the imperfect me, no one is me and that’s my power.

What impact would you like Do Something Different to have in the world?

  • Although I like to plan, I dont think the end impact of Do Something Different is predictable. Seeds are being sown, and some will flourish probably in an unexpected place.

What impact would you like Do Something Different to have on the world?

  • I believe it can support the needed behaviour changes to address climate change.

“I am tired of being called a radical. I don’t think I’m radical, I don’t think you’re radical, I don’t think we’re radical. What’s radical about what we want? We want economic justice, we want civil rights, we want jobs, we want hope, we want public transportation. I’m a radical? No, I’m not a radical. I don’t have four hundred thousand troops assembled in a desert wearing scuba diving suits to bring me more oil than I’m already choking to death on. That’s radical.” Barry Crimmins

Tom Hall

What impact would you like Flex to have in the world?

  • That it starts a seed change of “behavioural change made easy and effective”.

Better to have tried and failed, than not having tried at all.

What do I do?

Offer good counsel to the people who are building Flex.

Three reasons I believe in Flex

  • I always thought that doing things differently made life more fun. But Do Something Different (and Flex) has helped me understand why.
  • Because nothing actually changes unless action is taken
  • If more people became behaviourally flexible, the world would be a more inclusive, fairer and nicer place

What do I do?

Help the team think about how to tell the Flex story. (In other words, marketing.)

Three reasons I believe in Flex

  • Flex made me do something different, and it was ok actually…. I would recommend.
  • It’s better to ‘do’ your way out of thinking something than to think yourself out of doing something.
  • I think it will help more people live better lives.
